Ubiquitous Assimilation

DANCE PERFORMANCE | GRUPO OITO

Starting with the bare body and using one's own body as a seed for change, Ubiquitous Assimilation breaks away from white privilege and norms. What identity can we live, stay open, and do our bodies need to see other people as equals?

  • Premiere: September 2nd | 2021 | Gropius Bau, Berlin

  • Production: Grupo Oito

  • Funded by: Senatsverwaltung für Kultur und Europa and by Fonds Darstellende Künste with funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media

About the performance

»Ubiquitous Assimilation« confronts and works to dismantle the general conformity and acceptance of the racialized structuredness of our society. Whoever wants to leave »Happyland« (Tupoka Ogette) as a white person and sets out to become an anti-racist automatically leaves the comfort zone of habit. Racist structures, for example, in the form of discriminatory ways of thinking and stereotypes, as a particular sensitivity to accusations of racism or privileges taken for granted or »normal«, are firmly anchored in white bodies, white thinking, and white speaking. The performers of Grupo Oito strip themselves of their privileges and face the task of leaving the norm, taking on new perspectives and building a new, anti-racist identity, both literally and figuratively naked. The evening begins with a video installation in the stage set, flowing smoothly into the performance.
